On Sitting With Yourself

There is a version of you that only shows up when the house gets quiet. Not the version that answers emails, or laughs at the right times in a meeting, or tells your mother you are fine when she asks. The other one. The one that waits until the dishes are done and the lights are low and the phone is finally face down on the counter, and then sits across from you at the kitchen table like an old friend who has been trying to get a word in all week.

Most of us do not let that version speak. We fill the quiet on purpose. Another episode. Another scroll. Another errand we invented so we would not have to sit still. I have done it too. For a long time I thought staying busy was the same thing as being okay. It is not. Busy is just noise you get to be proud of.

The truth is, the loudest room in the country right now is the inside of a person's own head, and nobody is talking about it. We are being sold outrage in the morning and anxiety at night and a small, humming shame in between, and we are calling it a news cycle. Meanwhile the actual question, the one nobody is asking on the timeline, is simple. Are you okay. Not the performance of okay. The real thing.

I started writing these little pieces because I got tired of pretending I did not have thoughts of my own. I am a grown man. I have lived on three continents. I have loved people and been loved by people and buried a couple. I have watched this country from the inside and from a train window in the Veneto, and I have opinions that did not come from a podcast. They came from a life. It felt strange, at first, to write them down and not dress them up. To not turn every reflection into an argument. To let a thought just be a thought.

That is what this book is. Not a manifesto. Not a memoir. Just my thoughts. Some of them are about faith. Some of them are about family. Some of them are about the country. Some of them are about the small, unreasonable joys that keep a person tethered, a good cup of coffee, a phone call from a sister, the way an old song can put you back in a car you have not sat in for twenty years. I did not organize them by importance. I do not think thoughts work that way. The small ones are usually carrying the big ones on their back.

If you picked this up hoping I would tell you what to believe, I will save you the time. I will not. I am not in that business. What I will do is set my thoughts on the table next to yours and let you look at both. If any of mine are useful to you, take them. If not, leave them. That is the deal.

One last thing before we start. I wrote this book slow. On purpose. In the kind of quiet I was talking about earlier. If you can, read it the same way. Not all in one sitting. A few pages before bed. A couple in the morning with your coffee. Let a thought stay with you into your day and see what it does. Books like this are not meant to be sprinted through. They are meant to be sat with. The same way I sat with them when I wrote them.

Pull up a chair. It is quiet in here.
